Harare — Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika, the second wife of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s twin son Collins, has been granted bail by the High Court in a case where she stands accused of laundering US$9.35 million. This is the second time in three weeks she has secured release through the superior court.
On Wednesday, Justice Vivian Ndlovu set aside an earlier ruling by Harare regional magistrate Francis Mapfumo, who had denied bail on 2 September. Mapfumo had cited flight risk due to Tafirenyika’s access to substantial financial resources and assets. Justice Ndlovu ordered her to deposit US$5,000, surrender her passport, and report to police every Monday and Friday.
Tafirenyika was first arrested on 4 August after detectives raided her Greystone Park home. They reportedly recovered over 200 ampoules of pethidine and morphine from her bedroom and five rolls of cannabis from her Lamborghini. She was charged with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and initially denied bail, but on 20 August the High Court granted her US$1,000 bail. Her freedom was short-lived; she was immediately rearrested and taken to Harare Magistrates Court where additional financial crime charges were added.
Prosecutors allege she laundered US$9.35 million in illicit proceeds used to purchase real estate and luxury vehicles. She also faces charges under the Civil Registry Act over a forged identity document bearing her photograph but the name Getrude Badza.
Meanwhile, Tafirenyika’s mother Amina Jessub Arab, her sister Dyone, and another relative arrested in Bulawayo on drugs charges remain in custody. They are expected in court on Friday for routine remand.
